Everyone knows it: there’s a beautiful beach, but it smells a bit. And besides, there’s little aesthetically pleasing, moldy seaweed
Rarely is a real treasure so openly visible placed on the beach. Because seaweed is a surprisingly versatile material, especially for sustainable building, with almost unbeatable insulation values and fire resistance.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a lot of beach and seaweed. And startups. It’s logical that they go together.
And what exactly is the product defined as?
Build Blue prepares drift material (beach drift at bathing beaches, mostly seaweed) and produces building and filling materials from it, which are then distributed to private buyers or through architects and craftsmen.
Future desired customers: Vonovia, Scanhaus, all Baltic Sea resorts and craft businesses.

The global building sector is responsible for 38% of global CO2 emissions.

Current Status and Milestones
Currently, the first production site is being set up on the island of Poel. There, increasingly larger machines are being installed and capacity is being increased. Production will be gradually increased as a result.
The biggest milestones this year were the introduction of a blowing building material that meets modern construction requirements, being placed as a finalist in the VONOVIA Construction Contest, and the supply of several construction sites in MV and the approval of funding for regional development projects, as well as financial support from a private donor and further interest from potential angel investors.

Gründungsmitteilung
I am very grateful for the great support and the great interest of potential customers, investors, press and politics. I understand Build Blue as an important task and service for society and I am pleased that we have been able to successively prove over the last 10 months that our concept works and the product is marketable.
We have also collaborated with the Foundersbay right from the beginning of the idea and at the beginning of this year with the International Ocean Accelerator. I am also in contact with the DIZ in Rostock again and again, but also with the Innovationport in Wismar.
50,000€ Ticket within the Community
In the meantime until the promotion, we can happily announce that the StartUp has found an investor within the Gründungswerft-Community, who has simultaneously solved a 50,000€-ticket.
Question 1: What is going particularly well from your point of view in the startup scene in MV?
Short paths. You get to know each other quickly and keep running into each other. This is the only way good collaboration can arise.
Question 2: What do you wish for the future?
Collaboration with regional medium-sized companies, as well as inspiring other potential founders for bioeconomy and working with them together.
Question 3: How did you find the founding shipyard?
At almost all events, you meet other members of the founding shipyard – it’s great how the scene is growing together in a communal way.
If you had a vision for the start-up scene, or the founding scene of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, what would it be?
I would like to establish makerspaces with an open-door policy. Working together and inspiring each other is, in my opinion, one of the strongest vehicles for more growth and innovation. There are many people, also in the medium-sized sector, who would like to take time to provide their know-how and infrastructure for testing, nevertheless, building up this network is a long process that we could accelerate through this.
