Build Blue - Seaweed as insulation material from the beach

BuildBlue processes dried seaweed into an unbeatable insulation material for construction projects.

The construction industry contributes significantly to environmental pollution with 38% of global CO2 emissions, as determined by the UN Environment Programme in 2020.

Seaweed, often seen as annoying waste by coastal communities, has been a valuable raw material for centuries. Through innovative technologies, we want to not only relieve communities, but also make this extremely sustainable material industrially usable.

Build Blue is a company that has specialized in using seaweed as a sustainable insulation material in construction. This innovative idea was developed by Vincent Marnitz, who uses seaweed to produce environmentally friendly insulation materials.

Sustainable Insulation from the Baltic Sea

Seaweed insulation offers numerous benefits for houses and the environment:

  • Regional Production: Supporting the local economy with short supply chains along the coast.
  • True Alternative: Meets modern building regulations in processing and installation.
  • Premium Quality: Covers insulation and fire protection requirements of modern construction methods.
  • Recyclability: Maximizes resource efficiency through complete recyclability.

About Build Blue

The mission of the startup is to redefine sustainable house building. As coastal lovers, seaweed is part of their identity and drives their passion for environmentally friendly building materials. From their experiences as homeowners, real estate developers, and craftsmen, the founders of Build Blue are committed to sustainable construction.

Seaweed has historically been used for pillows, mattresses, and insulation in house building. The testing of seaweed processing with machines in Northern Germany two decades ago proved its feasibility.

Today, this valuable raw material often ends up in landfills or is buried under fields - Build Blue aims to counteract this.

Target Groups

Build Blue addresses the following target groups with its sustainable seaweed insulation materials:

  • Private builders: Individuals who build, renovate or refurbish a house and place value on environmentally friendly materials.
  • Architects and craft businesses: Professionals who want to use ecological building materials in their projects.
  • Coastal communities: Municipalities that consider seaweed as a waste product and are looking for a sustainable disposal solution through cooperation with Build Blue.

For his idea, Vincent Marnitz was awarded at the state ideas competition "Inspired". This competition annually awards the most original ideas and innovative research results in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Founder Vincent is a member of the founding shipyard and site manager in the Wismar region.
